A Picture is Worth: Help Portrait 2015

December 8, 2015

On December 5, 2015, I had an incredible opportunity to be apart of Help Portrait Day at The Experience in Murfreesboro, TN. This event is a team effort from photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, and volunteers who want to make a difference in people’s lives. Help Portrait Day provides hair and makeup services, a closet full of outfits, and a chance to partake in professional portraits. This event is catered to families in need, homeless, and anyone who may not have the opportunity to obtain lasting memories like a photograph. As a photographer for the event, I had 12 clients, ranging from individuals to large families. Each client was unique and beautiful in their own way.

Out of all of the stories I could tell from the day, one client stuck out. This family of six was full of energy when they were brought in to my station. With four kiddos under 12, this momma had her hands full. The event coordinator had notified me that this family was special as the youngest son had autism. They had never before had a family portrait where everyone was looking at the camera or had a smile on their face. We got everyone posed for the picture and magic happened. Not only was everyone looking, but everyone had the biggest grins on their faces. Here is their portrait.

After showing them their photograph, tears came to this sweet momma’s eyes. This is what Help Portrait is all about. Providing an image to signify family, beauty, and worth. It is easy to forget nowadays that some don’t have the fancy cameras and iPhones to take pictures constantly like we are so used to. This event provides confidence and reminds people how beautiful and special they are. A picture can do all that because a picture is worth.
